Faculty

Before receiving a call to serve one of our WELS schools, all of our teachers are well trained in both the religious and academic aspects of teaching with their Bachelor of Science degrees at one of our colleges. Several of our staff members have gone on to earn their Master's degree in education. Like all of us, our teachers come from all walks of life and have a variety of hobbies and interests.

Philip M. Zahn

I began teaching in 1987. In addition to being the Principal, I teach science, algebra and penmanship to grades 1-4 and 7-8.

I enjoy playing the piano and teaching art. At Resurrection, I play the organ for church services. Outside of school, I enjoy traveling, biking, inline skating, and going to plays and concerts.

I was born in Winona, MN and grew up on a farm in western Wisconsin. I lived in New Ulm from 1965 to 1968 and again from 1969 to 1971.

I have a brother who is a pastor in Illinois and a sister who teaches in Denver.

Experience: One semester before college graduation, I went to Renqiu, China to teach for two years. I came back to the USA and graduated with a B.A. from Martin Luther College in 2005. Upon graduation, I taught in Hong Kong for six months and in Shijiazhuang, China for one year. I have been blessed to serve as the 3rd and 4th grade teacher at Resurrection Lutheran School since 2007.

I was also called to join the Christ Our Rock family and serve on the Preschool Committee. I enjoy teaching the 5th and 6th grade Bible History and Catechism classes and assisting with Christmas for Kids, Easter for Kids, and Vacation Bible School.

In my spare time, I enjoy cooking and baking, shopping, listening to music, watching football, basketball, and playing softball. I also enjoy studying Chinese and traveling. I hope to someday make it to Australia, India, and parts of Europe. I am also blessed to spend time with my family, who live in the St. Paul, MN area.

Years of Experience: I taught three years during the 1970’s, grades K-3. I was called to teach at Resurrection in spring, 2004.

Birth place and places you’ve been: I was born and grew up on a dairy farm in beautiful Hudson, New York. After college I taught in Niles, Illinois, lived in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, and Houston, Texas where I had the special privilege to share God’s Word and English with Vietnamese families who were new to America.

One daughter works here in Rochester, another daughter is attending Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, and our youngest son is in high school.

Gina Grove

Grade 1

I’ve recently returned to the classroom after a wonderful hiatus as a home-based mom and child development/personal growth consultant to early childhood teachers, child care providers, parents, and various community groups. I'm a graduate of Dr. Martin Luther College (currently Martin Luther College) in New Ulm, MN, certified as an Infant/Toddler Training Intensive (ITTI) mentor trainer through FarWest Labratories of California, and am licensed to teach grades 1-8 in the state of Minnesota.

My fantastic husband, Dale, and three amazing TEENAGERS, Lauren, Becca, and Joshua, help keep me focused, grounded, and appreciative of the wonderful blessings in my life. Our chocolate Labrador, Daisy, does her best to remind us that there are lots more things to wag our tails about in life than to growl about.

If I could track down some spare time, I’d love to curl up with a good book, take a trip to South Carolina (I’ve never been there), or maybe make a return to community theater. Of course, I should really do battle with the dust bunnies who’ve taken up residence in our home, but I think most of them can settle in safely for now.
